YES!

Barrio @ Elsewhere

An experience in positivity and openness

We Surrender to Live by Saying YES

YES! is more than a barrio. It's a family of spiritual seekers, adventurers, and dreamers who come together each year to say YES to life.

Founded in 2017, we've been active participants at Nowhere since then. We are now really excited to be part of the new Monegros event, Elsewhere, bringing our energy to the Spanish desert once again.

We say YES to experimentation, nutrition, meditation, spirituality, breathing, partying, and laughing. We are a sex positive, consent focused community that is open to new experiences and committed to building something extraordinary in the dust.

Every year, our family gathers from 15+ countries. The journey starts when you apply, continues through our pre-burn planning calls, and lasts long after we leave the desert. This isn't a week long event. It's a year round community.

The Essentials

We take care of the basics so you can focus on what matters.

Food

One large communal meal each evening after sundown, cooked with love by rotating dinner teams of 6 to 7 people. We gather in the dome to share gratitude and stories over food made in our large paella pans. Breakfast includes muesli and milk alternatives, with leftovers often becoming lunch. Meals are typically vegetarian and vegan, with occasional carnivorous additions for those who wish!

Water

You will have as much water as you can reasonably use. Hydration and the ability to shower and refresh are top priorities in the Spanish desert. Our shower refill process is slightly manual by design, keeping awareness of water usage high while making sure everyone stays healthy and comfortable.

Shelter

Our 10 metre geodesic dome is the heart of the barrio, joined by a 12x15m stretch tent and over 250 square metres of shade. We're a fully solar powered barrio since 2022, with battery storage added in 2023 and extra panels in 2024 giving us power to spare and share with neighbours. No generators, no noise. Just the sun.

The Cosmic Laws

Ten principles we live by. Not rules. Invitations.

  1. YES, we are here to be open and experience new things
  2. YES, we are here to connect with one another
  3. YES, we are eccentric, kind and loving
  4. YES, we are playful and lighthearted
  5. YES, we surrender to the normal course of events, setbacks included
  6. YES, we strive to communicate clearly, for ourselves and others
  7. YES, we embrace our animalistic side
  8. YES, we are here to learn about ourselves and YES, we see others as the reflection of ourselves
  9. YES, we are responsible human beings
  10. YES, we come informed and prepared

Workshops

Our 2026 offerings are still incubating...

In past years we've hosted over 60 workshops spanning flavour tripping, tantra, rope work, ecstatic dance, breathwork, improv comedy, strip cornhole, movement practices, and much more.

Workshops at YES! come from the community. If you have something to share, bring it. The best moments often come from the most unexpected offerings.

How It Works

YES! is participatory, not pay to play. Here's what that means.

Morning Circles

Every day after sunrise and caffeine, the barrio gathers. Morning circles are where you check in with yourself and each other. Process last night's experiences. Acknowledge the FOMO. Share when things aren't okay. Hear stories. Laugh. Connect.

It's also where housekeeping happens. Updates, announcements, and the practical stuff that keeps a community running in the desert.

Circles are strongly encouraged for everyone, and genuinely important if you're new to the YES! family. We want to see you there. It's one of the most powerful ways to feel connected to everything we're building together.

Consent Culture

Consent is vital to the success of our barrio. This should be obvious, but we say it clearly and often.

Early in burn week, we hold a mandatory consent discussion and workshop that every member is expected to attend. Throughout the event, multiple point persons of varied gender identities are available for consent related guidance and support.

We are a sex positive community. That means we embrace all aspects of human connection with openness and respect. It also means we take consent seriously. Anyone who cannot adhere to common consent practices will be removed from our barrio without hesitation.

Participation

Every member has a role within the barrio or within the greater Elsewhere community. This could be leadership, build, strike, kitchen, or garbage management. Kitchen dinner shifts are part of life for everyone, with teams of 6 to 7 people cooking for around 50 in our large paella pans.

If you don't have a primary barrio role, you contribute at least one shift to the Elsewhere organisation at large. This is a fundamental part of burns across the globe. These worlds only exist because we spend the time to build and later strike them.

There's something deeper at work too. The psychological bond formed by being part of the creation is what transforms a gathering into a home.

Our Infrastructure

We've been building and improving our physical home since 2017. The barrio today includes a 10 metre geodesic dome at its heart, a 12x15m stretch tent, and over 250 square metres of shade structures. Our kitchen tent (4x6m) sits attached to our container for wind protection, stocked with everything you need to feed a family.

Since 2022 we've been 100% solar powered. No generators, no noise. We added battery storage in 2023 and extra panels in 2024, giving us power to spare and share with our neighbours.

There's also a basic shower (with a manual refill process to keep water awareness high), a beacon tower for navigation, and intimate lounge spaces including the cuddle puddle.

Community, Not Hierarchy

We're structured like an extended family. Input and contributions are always welcome and encouraged. We empower our people to collaborate wherever possible, while also defining roles where decisions have a responsible party.

We're not a dictatorship and we're not a direct democracy. We recognise that deadlines and real world pressures exist. If you're looking to fundamentally change our direction, this probably isn't the right fit. But if you want to bring your energy and ideas to something that's already moving, you'll find a home here.

What Barrio YES! Is Not

Not consent free

This is the most important distinction we make. Consent is vital to everything we do. We hold a mandatory consent workshop, have dedicated point persons, and anyone who cannot adhere to consent practices will be removed without hesitation.

Not pay to play

Every member actively contributes beyond financial participation. The participatory model creates the bonds that make this a home, not a service. You participate, you contribute, you belong.

Not politically correct

We are an inclusive barrio, but not a politically correct one. We're LGBT friendly and actively seek diversity. But we're not looking for anyone who wants to police expression or slap wrists for saying something imperfect. We keep things light on the political spectrum and heavy on the love.

Not primarily a sex barrio

We are sex positive and celebrate all aspects of human connection. Public displays of love may happen. But it's one of many things we embrace, not our main focus. If that's all you're looking for, this isn't the right fit.

Not camera free

We photograph our experiences to preserve memories and share them privately after the burn. We understand consent and respect boundaries. If you're someone who strongly prefers not to be photographed at all, we may not be the best fit.
